My approach is simple: give some retirement money the job of staying dependable, and give other money the job of growing.

One thing worries me whenever I talk with people about retirement.

It is not that everyone has chosen the wrong investment.

It is that many people have chosen nothing at all.

They work.

They pay into Social Security.

They pay the mortgage.

They raise their children.

And somewhere in the back of their minds is the assumption:

“Retirement will somehow work itself out.”

Maybe Social Security will be enough.

Maybe the house will be paid off.

Maybe there will be some savings.

Maybe things will simply work out.

I don’t think “maybe” is a retirement plan.

Social Security is extremely important. But it was never intended to replace every dollar of income someone earned before retirement.

The amount it replaces varies considerably depending on a person’s earnings history and when they begin collecting benefits.
