Fidelity's crypto IRA will let savers hold bitcoin, ether and litecoin inside traditional, Roth or rollover IRAs, and custody is handled by Fidelity ......
Fidelity now lets individual investors add bitcoin, ether and litecoin to retirement accounts through a new Fidelity Crypto IRA that supports traditional, Roth and rollover IRAs, according to company pages and coverage of the product.
The Fidelity Crypto IRA offering appears on Fidelity’s site as a way to “Invest directly in crypto with a Fidelity Crypto® IRA,” listing bitcoin, ether and other supported tokens, and the firm says clients can choose Roth, traditional or rollover accounts to hold digital assets in retirement, per Fidelity’s product page and a finance report.
Fidelity’s help and press material say custody and trading for crypto accounts are provided by Fidelity Digital Assets, the firm’s custody arm for digital assets, which the company names on its newsroom and help pages as the service that handles crypto custody for accounts offered to retail clients.
Independent reporting at the time of the launch noted the product limits direct-asset IRAs to major coins including bitcoin, ether and litecoin, and described the rollout as adding a route for savers to hold these assets inside tax-advantaged retirement wrappers, according to finance coverage of the announcement.
How it works: Fidelity’s public pages state that clients open or convert an IRA, then elect to hold supported cryptocurrencies inside that account; Fidelity Digital Assets handles custody and execution for the crypto portion of the account, according to the firm’s help documentation.
For retirement savers, the move aligns with other recent Fidelity crypto products and inflows: the firm has rolled out spot crypto ETPs and drawn notable flows into its crypto offerings, according to reporting and company announcements earlier this month.
What to watch: crypto held inside an IRA still carries market risk and tax rules specific to IRAs — the account type governs withdrawals and required distributions — and investors should check fees, custody terms and the specific coins supported before transferring assets into a Fidelity Crypto IRA, per Fidelity’s FAQs and public materials.
